Pie Day at Carnegie Mellon
15-213, the course that will change the way you think about computer systems!
This is what i heard from everyone i knew who had taken the course before i came to CMU and boy they couldn't've been more right! A fantastic course it is, and led by fantastic instructors!
They're such great sports that they (amongst several others) actually volunteer to get "pie"d in the face by their students every "pi" day annually! :D
The "pi" day is a tradition at CMU where on a date most convenient around pi = 3.14, professors volunteer to get pie smacked on their faces by eager students! All for fun, and profit as they say (well, it actually goes to charity). I'd heard a lot about this event and my friend Vishal and i took a break from working on our OS kernel to be a part of the experience.
We sure were glad as it turned out to be one of the most pleasant days all year! The bright sun coupled with the cool breeze really set the stage for a memorable fun filled evening.
Professor after professor lined up to be smacked in the face with a plate full of cream pie delivered at varying velocities and orientations by students :D The impromptu quips about a PhD candidate stood the risk of getting his graduation delayed by smacking his adviser in the face with pie were something you had to be there to experience!
Initially proceedings started at students contributing 5$ for a chance to pie the professor of their choice. Towards the end, the organizers announced a "discount sale" ... 1 $ to pie any professor! Oh man you should have seen the rush towards the ticketing counter! You bet i was one of them! :D
All in all, awesome stuff, a great evening and i cant wait to do this again next year! :D
